The Hornberg Special

Hook: Long streamer 3XL to 6XL;
    here, the 4XL Daiichi model
    1750; sizes 8 to 2.
Thread: Black 8/0 Uni-Thread or
    similar.
UnderBody: Silver flat tinsel or
    braid.
UnderWing: Yellow; could be
hen hackle tippets or a bunch
    of soft hair.
Wings (body): Two barred mallard
    flank feathers, with the cupped
    sides facing inward. Eyes: Jungle
    cock or a substitute
    (see tying note).
Hackle: Grizzly.
Tying Note: Real jungle cock is in
    short supply and is quite
    expensive. After the import ban
    in the late 1960s, tiers—myself
    included—started to simply omit
    this component. The flies didn’t
    fish worth a damn; hence,
    substitutions. Here, I’ve taken a
    dotted guinea fowl feather and
trimmed it so that only a single
dot, centered on the quill, is left.
    I wouldn’t use this on a classic
salmon fly, but for a “meat” fly
like the Hornberg, it does the job.
