Maynard's Marvel Thread: Black 8/0 (70 denier). Hook: 4X- or 6X-long streamer hook, your choice of size. Tail: Red kiptail. Body: Red floss and flat silver tinsel. Wing: Golden pheasant crest. Shoulder: Golden pheasant tippet. A bit of history: Popularized by Ora Smith, Maynard’s Marvel was created by Bill Zimmerman of Keene, New Hampshire, and named after “Doc” Maynard of Maynard’s Camps on Moosehead Lake. This pattern morphed into a version with a silver pheasant neck feather for the throat, and then into a version with two black hackles over the top of the pheasant crest wing. Most local tiers now make this fly with a synthetic gold-colored wing. Stewart and Leeman renamed this the Golden Marvel in their 1982 book, Trolling Flies, but most tiers and fishermen in the Monadnock region didn’t get the memo. |
