Jackass Thread: Black 8/0 (70 denier). Hook: 4X- or 6X-long streamer hook, your choice of size. Tail: Golden pheasant crest. Body: Peacock herl. Wing: Bronze mallard. Throat: Orange hackle fibers. Collar: Brown hackle. A bit of history: Now a fairly common fly, the Jackass was created by Ora Smith. It started out as a variation of the Golden Demon. When it became successful, his fishing partner, Eddie Phippard, asked Ora for some more, but wondered what he should call it. The reply was, “What should you call it? You can call it a ‘Jackass’ for all I care.” This pattern is mentioned in Trolling Flies, by Dick Stewart and Bob Leeman. |
