Swimming Caddis Pupa
Hook: Your favorite brand of nymph or wet-fly hook, sizes 16 to 12. A curved-shank scud or pupa hook with an up-turned eye is another a good choice. Weight: Small bead head or narrow lead wire. Thread: Size 6/0 (140 denier) in your choice of color. Abdomen: Small Stretch Tubing or a similar material used to tie the abdomen on nymphs and pupae. Select a color to match the natural insect. Thorax: Hare’s Wiggle Dub or Swisher’s Rub a Dub. Select a color to match the natural insect. Note: Select body materials in colors to match the caddisflies in your local trout stream or pond. You can’t go wrong using tan, brown, olive, and light olive. I’m making a basic pupa or emerger everyone can tie, but more adventuresome tiers might add wing buds and other features found on a real caddis pupa. |
