It’s for the Kids

Spend a weekend enjoying some great trout fishing in a beautiful environment while raising money for the world-famous St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Hooked on a Cure Celebrity Fly Fishing Classic is an annual event that supports St. Jude, one of the world’s premier facilities dedicated to helping children stricken with cancer. I recently had an opportunity to speak with April Conrad, the director of Hooked on a Cure. April is looking forward to hosting more than 25 teams of anglers this season as they enjoy good fishing and comradeship while supporting St Jude.

“This is the sixth year for Hooked on a Cure. Over the past five years, Hooked on a Cure has raised more than two-hundred thousand dollars for St. Jude. This will be the third year we’ve met in Vail, Colorado. So far the fishing has been excellent and the response has been tremendous.”

Both fly-fishing and non-fly-fishing companies really believe in Hooked on a Cure and lend their support, don’t they?

“Oh yes, we’ve been blessed to have great sponsors. Our corporate sponsors include Coca-Cola, Orvis, Columbia Sportswear, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Simms, Bass Pro Shops, Action Optics, Wapsi Fly, and Umpqua Feather Merchants. Many of the major rod companies are also corporate sponsors. We have several dozen sponsors—including American Angler and Fly Tyer magazines.”

What happens at Hooked on a Cure?

“The folks we call ‘premier anglers’ contribute to participate in Hooked on a Cure. The premier anglers are teamed with fly-fishing celebrity anglers. Our celebrity anglers have included Mel Krieger, Joe Humphreys, Jack Dennis, Phil Monahan, Mike Lawson, Gary Loomis, Flip Pallot, and many other famous fly fishermen and women. The teams will fish some of the best water in Colorado.”

This year’s event, scheduled for the weekend of September 16 to 18, will be held at the Lodge at Cordillera, in Vail, Colorado. This luxurious lodge and spa is an intimate hideaway offering elegant accommodations, legendary service, and breathtaking views of the Vail Valley. Anglers will spend their time enjoying fully guided fishing, and non-fishing partners can play golf or enjoy many other activities. In the evening, all participants to Hooked on a Cure will gather for cocktails, dinner, and a lively auction. (Non-participants are invited to purchase tickets to the gala dinner and auction.)
